Polypropylene (PP) Filter Membrane
Highly hydrophobic pure polypropylene membrane filters have very low extractables and broad chemical compatibility. They are ideally suited for filtration of compatible high-purity nonaqueous liquids such as laboratory reagents, organic HPLC samples and mobile phases, microelectronics manufacturing chemicals (photoresists, etchants, and residue removers), and solvent-based inks.
These hydrophobic membrane filters are very resistant to wetting with water, and present a good option for membrane degassing, membrane distillation, and membrane pervaporation applications. They are also well suited for air, gas, and vent filtration. Although hydrophobic, polypropylene membrane filters can be used with water and aqueous solutions after wetting with alcohol (or similar water miscible low surface tension fluid). With very low extractables, the wetted filters can be used for filtering purified water and critical aqueous solutions.
The nonwoven polypropylene prefilters (with nominally-rated pore sizes) are constructed with 100% polypropylene, and exhibit similarly low extractables and broad chemical compatibility. Although technically hydrophobic, the polypropylene prefilters are easily water wetted at modest differential pressures. The filters can tolerate pH from 1 to 14 and have excellent compatibility with acids and bases. They are ideally suited for clarification, and prefiltration ahead of membrane filters, of water, aqueous solutions, and compatible solvents. They are also commonly used for large particle analyses. Their meltblown multilayer calendered construction and resulting gradient density maximize dirt holding capacity while improving resistance to surface blinding.
Polypropylene membrane filters and prefilters can be safely disposed of by incineration. Unlike PTFE and PVDF filters, the polypropylene filters will not release harmful fluorine compounds.
Applications
¹ Based on testing with nitrogen
² Clean water flow through properly wetted filters would be about 2x the IPA flow
Applications
¹ Polypropylene nominal prefilters are not intended for microbial retention.
